Ranch Information
At Darwin, the most remote guest ranch in the lower 48 states, you will find a herd of horses dotting a spectacular green river valley amid a collection of 100-year-old cabins. An inholding in the 2.5 million-acre Bridger Teton National Forest, 22 miles down a dirt road, we offer unparalleled experiences and hospitality at our secluded high-altitude oasis.
We offer access to the remote high country of the Bridger-Teton Forest and the Gros Ventre Wilderness and an approach that provides the freedom to make this experience your own. Our food is fresh, local, organic, homemade, and delicious. Our service approach quietly assures that your experience is unforgettable. We are off the grid and generate our own hydro power. We are committed to preserving, protecting, and sharing the land. For the Darwin, this includes commitments to maintaining the lightest possible footprint; to holistic pasture management; to facilitating exploration and personal challenge; to communicating the wonders of our location and broader ecosystem; to preparing meals with responsibly raised and sustainably sourced ingredients; to providing a relaxed, responsive, and friendly guest experience; to meticulously preparing for adversity and asking that guests understand their role in individual and collective safety; to developing a unique, Mustang-based equestrian program; and to engaging in conversation about the privileges, responsibilities, and complexities of recreating in a wilderness area.
Accommodations
The Darwin Ranch is home to nine, hand-built guest cabins, ranging in size, price, and location on the ranch. Each blends modern style into 100-year-old structures. Appointed with the timeless comforts of cozy beds with crisp sheets & down pillows, private baths, and wood-burning stoves for chilly nights.
Dining
We believe that good food comes from a web of relationships, and we aim to showcase the full range of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem’s culinary offerings. The majority of food at Darwin is sourced through local means. Beef, lamb, and pork are provided by Ishawooa Mesa Ranch, Darwin’s sister property in Cody, Wyoming. Vegetables come locally from Jackson Hole’s local and regional markets. Our menus are healthy, made from scratch, vegetable-forward, varied, and casual, and they reflect the bounty of the summer season. Our cooks are experienced, imaginative, and inspired by chefs and traditions from around the world. We are committed to placing sustainability at the forefront of our operation, and we take this ethic into the ways we source and prepare our food.
Recreation
At Darwin, guests design their own days. You can spend the day riding and hiking across mountain ridgelines without seeing a soul for miles. Or you might wet a line, or settle into an afternoon with a book. In the evenings, you might gather for cocktails on the porch of the main lodge overlooking the twists and turns of the Gros Ventre River, or watch the sunset while soaking in our wood-fired hot tub.
Riding:
We offer guided rides for beginners to advanced riders that immerse you in the surrounding wilderness. We will help you plan your days so you are as challenged as you wish to be. These rides are offered each day of the week except for Saturdays and can range from a few hours to a full day.
Hiking:
World class hiking is accessible directly from our porch, whether you desire a simple sojourn across the meadow or a day-long endeavor that takes you to ridgelines with unparalleled views. Trails from the ranch lead to remote peaks, glacial lakes, and alpine meadows, taking you over hidden mountain passes and along roaring rivers.
Fishing:
The ranch provides remote access to the pristine Upper Gros Ventre River, which is protected by Wyoming’s Wild & Scenic Designation. One can fish for miles in either direction, and it is a rarity to encounter others. Please note that all anglers practice catch and release fishing with barbless hooks, and we may occasionally restrict access to certain stretches of water if water temperatures or fishing pressures are unusually high.
